Frequently asked questions.
What is iQFOiL?
iQFOiL is a windsurfer that has a hydrofoil. The sail powers the kit and the hydrofoil allows for the board to be airborne at new high speeds. The iQFOiL’s first appearance in the Olympics was in 2024 and is guaranteed to be the Olympic windsurfing class through 2028.
How do you get to the Olympics?
First, win the U.S. Olympic Team Trials—that’s the box to check. Since the U.S. is hosting the 2028 Olympics, each sailing class automatically secures one entry, removing the usual need to earn a country qualification spot.
Now, in order to check that box, a ton of training both in the gym and on the water, racing experience, good nutrition, video review, and so much more has to happen.
How does sailing in the Olympics work?
iQFOiL is one of 10 sailing disciplines in the Olympics. Each country that qualifies itself for the games can send 1 sailor for a total of 30 competitors. The event will be sailed over several days, with the first few days being a qualifying series for a medal race that takes place on the last day of the competition. Only the top 10 sailors compete in the medal race series which is a winner takes all style race.
